In Defense of Journalists and Journalism

People should be free to discuss and define their own narratives. That’s a fundamental piece of philosophy for me, and something I embrace in all the work that I do.

But there’s a noise problem. Too much noise drowns out the narratives worth hearing.

That was enough of a problem when social media was “just” choked with bots and trolls.

But now we have AI. And with AI comes whole new levels of junk flooding the Internet, as unsavory operators churn out microsites by the thousands with whatever fever dreams a LLM can produce.

As AI continues to develop we need journalists — especially those who are building trust in the community — to help filter out all the noise, so we can focus on the conversation.

Granted, it’s more important now than ever that journalists perform their sacred duty responsibly and avoid journalistic activism. Ultimately it’s up to the viewers to choose who they trust. However, we are going to rely more and more on quality journalism to help filter all the AI garbage out there. That’s where we, the community, should begin our conversations, debate and discourse.

We have to be able to count on someone to give us the information we need, when we need it, in a factual and honestly reported manner.

The news industry is in a really bad place right now, and the more people can come up with tools and platforms to encourage and promote responsible journalism, the better we’ll all be.
